Quartz Creek

This is currently my favorite hike.  This trail is in the White Mountains which is about an hour north of Fairbanks.  I want to do this hike again, however not in May as we did this time.  This was a pretty wet hike with all of the snow melting (as you can see from the pictures the snow hadn't completely melted away yet.)  Additionally, because it was so wet the number of mosquitoes was unreal.  This is the one and only time we have had to wear head nets.

This hike is about an eight mile hike.  At the beginning is a good 3/4 to one mile up hill portion and at the mid-point (where you turn around and head back to the car) is a 3/4 of a mile STRAIGHT uphill section.  The rest is pretty mild and very beautiful.  However, we ended up hiking FIFTEEN miles!  The directions told you to stay on the Quartz Creek trail, but they really meant an off-shoot of the trail (most likely the directions were done before trail signs were put in).  So we went four miles before turning around and taking the trail to the left.

The views on this hike though are incredible.  You are up above the tree line and in May the spring flowers were out.  Brad got really sick of taking flower pictures.  =)  You can see these wonderful flower pictures posted on the flower page (click on flowers to go to that page).

Is this Quartz Creek? Nope this is the trail.
There is still snow in May.
More mountains in the distance.
Snow block!
Care for a snow ball fight?
Very pretty waterfall - too bad this is on the incorrect route!
