Geocaching is Hiking with a Purpose

Hiking is fun, particularly in Alaska.  However, geocaching adds a bit of flavor to the old hiking game.  Geocaching is a bit like a treasure hunt.  You are given some broad hints, such as general directions to get to the hiking trail and a set of coordinates.  You put the coordinates in a Global Positioning System (GPS) device and then make your way there.  Once in the general area (how close depends on your GPS system and the number of satellites your GPS can get a lock on) you look for the treasure.  This is sometimes a plastic container or, more often, an army ammunition can.  You sign into the log, go through the contents of the container and exchange an item.  It is good manners to put something in better than what you got out.  We use the Geocaching site to decide which cache to search for.
