11/24 I've added a new Serum Run page - it contains the trip itinerary. I've also added to that page a My Map from Google, that I will update with the trip itinerary too, so you can get a more visual picture.
Apocalypse Design, Inc. is giving Ilana and I a 20% discount! Thank you Apocalypse Design. So if you want truly warm equipment, please consider getting something with them. We had them replace our zippers on our coats, they made a custom hood for my coat and have the best mittens. I have been very impressed with their work, as well as their quick turnaround.
This year's medical mission for the Serum Run is stroke prevention education. We will have a medical team accompanying us, who will be speaking and educating the villages on our route about stroke prevention.
I'm in the process of buying a used sled - the kind you pull behind you with tons of stuff on it. Go to Northern Sled Works to see a picture of one - it is the red one at the very top of the picture. For pictures of this type of sled being used for the Serum Run go here.

11/17/2008 Well, I've put 130 miles on the new Bearcat. We've joined the local snowmachiner club, the Fairbank's Snow Travelers, and they ride 3 out of 4 weekends. We've had a lot of fun so far.
I took the Bearcat 570 (mine) in for its 100 mile (well 130) check-in. Seems my muffler is running too hot and melting the hood - they ordered a new hood, and if I understood correctly it is covered by warranty. Also they said one of the rear shocks got pulled into the track? Not sure, how that happened and they've ordered more parts for that. Also possibly covered by warranty... I hope since they didn't call me and talk to me before they ordered parts. Course my next question is, did they fix the problem or just the results of the problems? I am very concerned, since the trip to Nome is long.
I've started to work on my trip menu. I've started with my favorite meal of the day - breakfast. So I'm mixing easy stuff up, and seeing if I like it and changing it if I didn't like it. I've got to call or email my mom for Grandpa's rice recipe - translated into measurements of course! Mom always uses the handful of this, pinch of that for this particular recipe (this is a hint Mom!)

10/20/2008 Brad, Ilana and I attended the information Meeting on
September 27th. Wow it is a long drive to Willow =). Took Mort with
us, he did really well until bed time. I think had fun, but well it
was bed time and why weren't we at home? Learned a lot.
Bought a "new" snowmachine this weekend!
Brad is the proud owner of a 1995 Artic Cat Bearcat. It isn't much fun
being a passenger on a snowmachine, so now he's much more likly to join
me. Which also means he won't have to worry as much about me
snowmachining all by my lonesome (and did I get stuck out in the middle
of nowhere). The newest pictures may be at the end of the picture
list, so make sure you've scrolled over and seen them all!

10/21/2008 Ilana and Heather have been officially expected to run in this winter's Serum Run! Nome here we come.
|
What is the Serum Run?
From the Serum Run website - "First, it is to commemorate the twenty men and their dog teams who relayed crucial diphtheria serum to Nome, saving countless lives. Second, and more importantly, it is to widen the awareness throughout Alaska of the need for inoculations for every single child and to stress important health issues such as immunizations, medical exams & cancer screening, tobacco cessation, accident prevention, HIV awareness and drug and alcohol abstinence."
What will I be doing?
I will be snowmachining in support of musher Ilana Kingsley from Nenana, Alaska to Nome, Alaska.
How far is it? How long will it take?
It is about 800 miles and it will take 17 days or more.

| 2008 Arctic Cat Bearcat 570 |
|
For the Serum Run I got a 2008 Arctic Cat Bearcat 570 - new! Hopefully that means less of a chance of breaking down in the middle of no where. I'll have pictures of mine as soon as I have it - but right now they are ordering and installing a tachometer and stud tunnels. The tunnels are to reduce the chance of damage done by studs on the track. After I get the machine I will put studs in the track.
